Today I upgraded from the Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 II to the Canon EF 50mm f/1.4 USM. It has better build quality, a wider aperture, better handling and a faster focus. I did not only upgrade to a better lens because of the specifications, I've also been taking photography more seriously now, even more serious than I already did. Ever since I started working with the Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 II I knew that I wanted to continue working with prime lenses. A prime lens has a fixed focal length, meaning that it does not zoom. Not being able to zoom almost forces you to keep moving around your subject wich makes your compositions look more genuine. To me, buying a new lens is pretty much the same as buying a new pair of shoes. They last long, you use/wear them frequently, and you have a lot of choice, so I've never regretted purchasing them.
